What Would Happen If... -
04-28-2020, 11:53 AM
...you came home and told your significant other that you had just lost $40,000 playing pool?
I think, in my case, there would first be a quiet, "You did what?"
Then there would be a series of questions as to the exact circumstance of the loss, which would eventually devolve into higher pitched, "What were you thinking?" and then general derogatory comments concerning my mental health and moral fiber.
If I'm lucky.
I think we'd eventually be OK but I would be in for an extended stay in the Dog House and if I ever so much as mentioned gambling at pool again, huge heaping piles of scorn and derision would be hurled my way.
IOWs, I want no part of it.

I bought a high end custom flats boat without asking. Kept it in a high and dry for six months before she found out. I would think it would go something like that did. She sure hated that boat.

buddy of mine had to tell his wife he lost 12k playing online poker.
I also want no direct part of that conversation.

So keep your nose clean keep it on a shoe string

She wouldn't blink if I spent 40 grand on a car...matter of fact, she recently suggested I do that...I didn't, realizing that a new Mustang wouldn't make me any happier than my current 31,000 miles 11 years old one. Might even make me less happy since the current one has been dead reliable with zero hassles.
Let's just say she'd blink if I lost 40 grand gambling. But she also knows I'd never do that. 45 years married means some earned trust has been built.
But then, I've only gambled at pool once. And it wasn't gambling. My honorary nephew needed some money..flat broke. I offered to play him one game of 9 ball for $100. He currently has a 696 Fargo. We both knew I was making a donation, but this way he has no obligation to pay me back.
Yeah, JB and others would consider me a nit. That's okay...I don't mind being a low skilled recreational player.

If I paid up then there would be a problem as the significant other would notice the missing money.
If I did a payment plan then she wouldn't care because no money is missing. She won't care.

She would just be disappointed that I didn't get a win/loss statement.
She gambles, heavy. It's what she enjoys. She does alright.

Is it early in the morning or late in the morning? Has she seen me sitting in the car down the street? These are all important questions.

I guess I'm a nit too. I don't gamble. On anything.
Well, I sorta did once also. Some guy here from AZB was coming into town and was looking for someone to play cheap sets. I had read many times on here that money on the line will make you play better and I wanted to put that statement to the test.
Anyway, I took five $20 bills with me and came home without the five $20 bills. It was all okay, I knew before I left the house that I was going to donate it all. The guy was nice enough to offer some weight, but I refused each time he offered. I pretty much knew after that outing that I would never gamble on anything again. It is not enjoyable tossing hard-earned money into the air on a windy day, which in essence is what I did.
I guess the "money will make you play better" idea doesn't work for us lower-skilled players, eh?

Yeah, regardless of what some on here might claim, many are in no position to be able to post up that kind of money anyway....especially if they're married....and even more so if they have children still living with them.
Anybody that's not well-to-do needs their ass kicked for even think about posting $40,000.
JMHO.

Nobody in their right mind would post that obscene amount of money to gamble especially not in some hot and humid garage. This isn't even high rolling Vegas casino we're talking about.
I would never post that amount of money but if you can afford it then it's not a gambling problem.
This is just dumb.

I've certainly dropped more on a couple pieces of land that I didn't have to include her the decision making process and all was fine.
If I came home and said I lost 40k playing pool.....well, it wouldn't be fun times for a while.

My wife would be shocked because while I may be known to drop more than that on my car habit, we have an understanding about that, we don't have that deal on gambling. Also, I could cover that kind of money and not impact our life.
It's also just not something I'd do. I gamble a bit but not with money I don't have or even money I'd miss. My guess is that the person in this example has had to go home and explain a few things a time or two before.
