Hi,

This is my first post. I recently started in the NY APA I hadn't really played often before but I quickly got up to a skill level 5, however, Im now stuck where Im not getting any better even though Im practicing during the week in between games, sometimes I I also feel like my game is game is incredibly in consistent. Can anyone explain to me what I should do try and get some consistency and some decent drills to help me push on.

Seconded. I had a lesson with Fran back in March. Had a good time, walked away with a lot of useful information, and saw an improvement in my game as a result. I would have regular lessons with her if I lived in the area.

Read some books. Bob Byrne's book on pool and billiards and Ray Martin's 99 Critical Shots. You'll need to practice what you read. Use Bob Byrne's book as your Bible. Read before you go to bed...lol!

Go back to the basics and practice. Don't shoot a ball until you know you have it lined up right. Don't try to miss close...shoot the ball into the hole. You can make almost any shot from the center of the table. Center ball hit is one of pools best shot.

If you get beat, tell yourself that--that player just beat a good player.

No, I don't have occasion to go to Brownstone. I teach in Queens and Manhattan at Amsterdam Billiards.

I'm not an instructor, but I can share what's helped me as I am also a beginner:

Randy G and Scott lee have a great dvd on fundamentals. I'm sure if u PM them they can sell u one.

Jerry briesath also just put out a 3dvd package which is excellent! I own them both and love them both. For fundamentals I prefer Scott and Randy's. Just because it is excusively about fundamentals. Very straight forward and simple.

As far as books I also recommend phill capelle's 'play your best pool'.

Whatever you do, take some lessons from a qualified instructor. Dont try to start off on your own.

I started palying golf when I was 50. The very first thing I did was take lessons. Back in '63 when I started playing pool, no one would teach you how to play (the fundementals) so, I had to teach myself.....man that was a big mistake. Bad habits are hard to break.

Its a fun game and it will challenge you personally. The game is all about you.

When your not playing well, trying to fix your problems and figuring out why something you usually pot 9 times out of 10 misses is awful!!!!
